Christmas Newsletter 2008

Dear  Guest,

Another year has come and gone, albeit without much sun and plenty of rain, and I can't believe that I am now writing this letter coming up to what will be our tenth year at the Hensleigh !!

It seems like only yesterday that we moved down to this beautiful part of our country and we still haven't seen everything it has to offer!

Marceta as usual has been producing delicious delights for you in the kitchen - slaving over her stove!!  Her Dorset Apple Cake and sweet and savoury scones are to die for and we've had so many requests for cakes and scones to take away that we've now introduced Ceta's Cakes, a new service selling takeaway cakes - don't forget to order yours to take home with you!!

Jane had her baby, a beautiful girl with a big smile - Amy Jane, on May 25th. We've missed Jane during the year but are looking forward to her returning, if only part-time, in 2009 !

Our able team of university students saw us through the summer in the guises of Matthew, Annabel & Claire. They're all now back studying hard (??) and we look forward to hopefully having them all back with us in the summer - when we can all keep our fingers crossed to see the sun !!

My own new baby.... Whoopsadaisy - pottery painting... a passion I've been harbouring for a few years... came into it's own this year with lots of people coming in from the rain to paint a mug, money box, vase etc etc.  At the moment we're busy with lots of people painting Christmas presents and decorations...  don't forget if you'd like to paint when you stay next just ask... anytime's fine to paint.. and if you haven't managed to glaze and fire your piece before you leave  I'll post it on for you!

Marcetta, Ally, Helen, Donna, Jane and all the staff at the Hensleigh join us in wishing you a very Happy festive season and offer you all our good wishes for the New Year,

Best Regards,

John, Caroline & Gemma

Christmas Newsletter 2007

Where do the years go to....another one over and it still seems like only yesterday we moved down to beautiful Dorset!!   2008 will actually mark our ninth year at the Hensleigh so we'd better get busy thinking about a 10 year celebration for 2009 !!

As everyone who has stayed with us this year will know, we have moved back into the hotel to live, taking over a few of the previous bedrooms so the Hensleigh now has just seven guest rooms - remember to book early to secure your favourite room!!  We've uncovered the old archway between the bar and what was the dining room to make the bar bigger and lighter, a much cosier place to enjoy that pre-dinner drink or cup of coffee!!

Charmouth cliffs continue falling to the delight of fossil hunters - the beginning of November saw a huge slip on the east beach - it managed to go under and force the beach up 6 foot on top of it - a spectacular sight!!!  Luckily the coast path is still open and holding its own!!

We continue striving to include more and more local fresh food in our menus, our succulent Lyme Bay Plaice though seems to take a lot of beating according to a lot of you!! We've also introduced Freshly ground fair-trade coffee and fair trade tea during 2007. Dorset Cream teas continue to be very popular with lashings of clotted cream and locally made strawberry jam!!

Our jams, biscuits and muesli are proving favourite gifts to take home, we've now started gift warpping packs and hampers of local goodies - great as gifts!!

Gift Vouchers are always available if you'd like to give a friend or relative a well earned break!

We'd love to see you again in 2008 - there's lots of great special breaks...

With Best Wishes for a Very Merry Christmas and a Wonderful 2008 !

from John, Caroline, Gemma, Maria, Marceta and All the Team at the Hensleigh !

Yes, it's finally open !!!

Those of you who have been to see us in the latter part of the year will have seen for yourself that the coastal path from the beach to the east up Stonebarrow Hill and onto Golden Cap has finally reopened - the paths are wider and the views are just as spectacular as before - so don your walking boots and walk up to the highest point on the south coast (and of course down the other side for wonderful crab sandwiches at the Anchor Inn in Seatown).

Hensleigh House Parties

We've had several groups of guests take over the Hotel for a get together again this year.
If you are organising a family get together, a walking break for friends or any type of break with a group do give us a call.
Menus and mealtimes can be arranged to suit you and your party.

West Country Tastes

We've teamed up with more local suppliers for next season providing Dorset Lamb, Dorset Honey, traditionally smoked fish and duck amongst others... Along with our current fantastic suppliers of local fresh fish from Samways, Preserves, handmade in Bridport by Forest Products, delicious honey roast sausages from Westaways in Newton Abbot - we experimented with a  different sausage for a week earlier in the year but the moans of guests and the threat of staff leaving if they couldn't have their favourite sausage for breakfast we soon changed them back !!

Lyme Regis

The works to stabilise Lyme have been progressing well this year. The new beach is now fully open with much easier access along the front and the work up in the gardens is due to finish by Easter  next year

Reopened earlier this year, it's bigger and better than before - when you're down it's well worth a visit .
The Centre is running a full programme of fossil walks, talks and activities again in 2007.

Christmas 2005

Dear Guests,

And so yet another year has come & gone………we have, enjoyed seeing so many familiar faces and many new ones pass through the Hensleigh doors .and the time has come to wish all our guests new & old a VERY HAPPY CHRISTMAS!

We hope you have had a good year. We have, although a very busy one!! As many of you know our house was finally finished in June - so much for moving in in April! Just as well when we started we didn’t realise how much time & effort is involved in having a house built or we’d never have started!!! And maybe by next June we’ll get round to hanging the pictures on the wall!!!! Even the locals say it looks like it’s always been there and approve, praise indeed!!

The revamped extended Heritage Coast Centre opened in May and houses interactive computers, hands on displays and lots of information on fossils, fossil hunting and the local coastal and marine wildlife. There is even a video microscope that you can use to examine your finds!

They are organising lots of walks and special weekends during the year all of which you can find on their website www.charmouth.org or call the wardens on 01297 560772.

If you ventured to Lyme Regis while you were here this year you will have seen all the coastal protection work going on. The work is vital to save the town from destructive landslides and coastal erosion - the current work is aimed at protecting the foreshore -we’ve seen huge Norwegian trawlers dropping huge boulders off the Cobb wall to form a new defence along with lots of stabilising work in Lister & Langmoor gardens - all very interesting to watch!!

Work in West Bay finished earlier this year and the new Western Pier which stretches well out into the sea is well worth a walk along when you’re next visiting.

Hensleigh life has pootled on - Maria, Julia & Marceta have continued to provide you all with culinary delights. Marceta has made countless batches of scones and Dorset Apple cake throughout the year and her homemade shortbread biscuits were becoming something of a hit at the end of the summer!! We’ve had a few wonderful new faces join the team during the year and hopefully they’ll all be back with us next year to see many of you again.

Gemma has now turned seven - a real grown up helper now and we’re counting the years until all her friends can help in the hotel!! She joined Brownies this year and due to the Brownie leader retiring - I somehow got persuaded to take over as Brown Owl!!! It’s all good fun, but any ideas from ex Brownies or leaders amongst you would be most welcome - particularly any on how to keep twenty 7-10 year olds quiet all at the same time!?

We’ve taken the opportunity to include next years tariff for your information. As a valued guest we’d like to offer you our special loyalty bonus - if you book before 31st March 2006 for a stay any time in 2006 you will only be charged at 2005 tariff .
