Honiton is the gateway
to East Devon. It has also gained for itself the well-earned reputation of being the
antiques capital of the entire South West. Honiton has successfully combined its market
town heritage with the all facilities and infrastructure of a bustling tourist town. It has a long established tradition of lace making,
floral pottery and glove making. The history of these crafts in the town make fascinating
viewing, but today the traditions live on only in the museums and in the odd specialist
shop. |
As a shopping centre and market town, Honiton offers up a variety of riches. Collectors
and enthusiasts alike spend hours scouring the many antique, curiosity and book shops as
well as the regular auction houses. In fact, in Honiton there are more antiques shops than
in any other town in the country. |
One of the town's
small side streets is the focus of animal mayhem every Tuesday when the cattle market
comes to town. In addition, two street markets per week (Tuesday and Saturday) contribute
to make Honiton a centre of pilgrimage for every type of shopper and anybody interested in
viewing all walks of life.
